Outdoor plants to make the most of summer
If there’s one thing I love about summer, it’s being able to make the most of the outdoor areas of my home. Whether it’s a small porch, a garden, a terrace or a balcony, the ideal thing is to make it the perfect place to enjoy family gatherings, friends or children’s games.
Here are a few ideas that are sure to please your garden centre customers.
Geraniums (Pelargonium)
A classic but guaranteed success, geraniums will brighten up any outdoor space. They are distinguished first and foremost by their wide range of colours, and then by their ability to flower in the warmer months.
They are also relatively easy to care for and can grow in pots or window boxes without much difficulty. They are an ideal choice for your customers.
Aloe vera
Aloe vera is an essential plant in any home that wants to take advantage of its natural properties. It is highly resistant to water stress, which puts it on a par with crassas. At Rachel’s, you’ll find both standard and organic crops, which are better suited to taking advantage of the plant’s healing properties, and remedying the damage caused by the sun after days on the beach and in the pool.
Hibiscus
Hibiscus is a spectacular summer plant with its large flowers. Its intense green leaves bring out the colours of its flowers even more. At Rachel’s, our quality brand -lou lou®- has sponsored this crop for its great handiwork, for its innovative varieties with over 20 colours to choose from, and for the constant care given to the environment in its production, using recycled materials.
This sun-loving plant can become the centre of attention in any outdoor space. Continuous watering and, preferably, a semi-shaded spot, will enable it to thrive without any great demands.
However, if it is planted directly in the ground, it needs to be in a place sheltered from too much wind so that it can be protected when the cold, its main enemy, arrives.
One solution is to leave it in a large enough pot where it can stay for a few years, and then transplant it to a larger size when the time comes. This way, you can easily move it to a sheltered spot when the cold arrives.
Aromatic herbs (basil, rosemary, thyme, mint, etc.)
Aromatic herbs are practical and attractive. Plants such as basil, rosemary and mint not only add greenery and flavour to the room, but can also be used in the kitchen – impossible not to think about at this time of year!
They can be placed in planters or pots on balconies, porches and in the garden. They need constant watering.
Petunias (Petunia spp.)
Petunias are another excellent choice for adding colour to outdoor spaces. With a myriad of colours and patterns, these flowers are perfect for hanging baskets and window boxes. They are hardy and can withstand the heat of summer with proper watering.
Bear in mind, however, that they are seasonal plants and will only last as long as it takes for the cold weather to arrive.
Succulents and cacti
For those who prefer a minimum of maintenance, succulents and cacti are the ideal plants. They require very little water and can withstand very dry conditions and long hours of sunshine. Placing them in decorative pots can add a personal, modern and sophisticated touch to any outdoor space, so don’t hesitate to offer your full range of pots, in terracotta, fabric etc…
The right plants will help you create a cool, pleasant spot for the hottest days or evenings of the year. What’s more, they’ll always be your allies.
