One of my favourite scents is jasmine, so this month I’ve decided to tell you about a beautiful plant that’s doing wonderfully well: Jasminum polyanthum.

Commonly known as Chinese jasmine or winter jasmine, this is a climbing plant that stands out from other varieties of jasmine for several reasons.

One of the most interesting qualities to me is its rapid growth. This plant can reach heights of up to 6 metres, developing shoot-like stems that enable it to cover large areas in a short space of time. Its ability to climb and spread makes it an ideal plant for decorating pergolas, walls, railings and balconies, providing a dense and beautiful cover – imagine the success it would have on a newly planted terrace! It can also be grown in pots with appropriate supports, adapting to different spaces and design needs, so you can offer it to customers who need help separating spaces, such as restaurant and café terraces.

Another important feature for me is that Jasminum polyanthum is particularly appreciated for its intense flowering. In late winter and early spring, it produces a multitude of pink buds which, when they open, reveal small, white, five-petalled flowers with a sweet, intoxicating fragrance. I love this intense, pleasant fragrance, and it’s what sets it apart from other jasmine species, making it an excellent choice for those looking to perfume their outdoor spaces naturally.

It should be noted, however, that although it is best suited to mild and temperate climates, it has a moderate resistance to cold. This plant can tolerate temperatures as low as -5°C, although in regions where winter temperatures fall below this threshold, it is advisable to protect the plant or grow it in pots so that it can be moved to sheltered locations during the winter. In warmer climates, it retains its evergreen foliage, while in colder regions it may behave like a deciduous plant. Be careful if you have a sales outlet in cold areas, as it is very attractive to a large niche market.

The advantage of cold hardiness for this climber is that it serves to stimulate the next flowering season, responding with an explosion of flowers that leaves no one indifferent.

Finally, I’d like to highlight its remarkable resistance to pests and disease, making it very easy to care for. Polyanthum Jasmine prefers fertile, well-drained soil, and although it appreciates regular watering during its growth and flowering period, it is important to avoid waterlogging to prevent root problems. Good pruning after flowering will help maintain its shape and vigour, removing dry branches and encouraging denser growth.

It’s worth pointing out that, once adapted to its environment, it will look dense and deep green wherever it is, maintaining the garden’s desired aesthetic all year round.

Interesting, isn’t it? It’s a marvel!

Don’t hesitate to include it among the options offered to your customers these days and highlight its aesthetic value and the characteristics of the plant, as it will undoubtedly stand out from other jasmine varieties.
